Summary of ‘Charlie’
Scene 1 10 Charlies come to the stage and make a structure. They represent the dialogues of 3 philosophers:Lalon, Rabindranath Tagore and Socrates. Then the Charlies tell their story through a song and choreography. After that Charlie enters and have deluxe breakfast in front his accommodation sewerage pipe. That time a prostitute named Rozina comes to give her rent, but Charlie refuges just because of her profession. Rozina likes Charlie and dreams to have a life with him even though she is doubtful whether is would come to reality. As she wakes up from her dream, she runs away from the stage. Socrates, Tagore and Lalon come to Charlie to help him finding the meaning of life. Charlie becomes confused about his psychological illusion of these great man. Scene 2 A peculiar masked person comes to stage and tells about professions as the way of making money through a choreography. Charlie enters on stage with a thought of people and their works. He tells his own story and the history behind his ‘Charlie’ getup. He wants to do independent business and collects his savings which is 52 (language movement), 71(liberation war) and 75(assassination of the father of nation). In total his capital is 198 taka and he need to find the rest 2 taka. He thinks with 200 taka he can start a business and earn enough money to have home, car, women and a luxurious life. Scene 3 Whole day Charlie was searching for 2 taka and then he goes to home for resting. Rozina was at home as she doesn’t want to go to her regular profession. As she had money, she wanted to be his business partner. But Charlie gives her a condition that she has leave prostitution and all the money she saved. After an argument they agreed to be partner and start a business with a new beginning. Scene 4 Charlie and Rozina open a massage parlor in an open place. But a political leader interrupts, saying without his permission no one can run business there. Charlie wants to explain that he is searching the meaning of life but the leader thinks Charlie is a terrorist. Charlie escapes away and realize that it can be a meaning of life. Scene 5 & 6 Charlie takes shelter to his mentor Socrates, Tagore and Lalon as they are created by his psychological illusion. Charlie talks to them when he has confusion, questions or queries. They start to debate. Charlie needs 2 taka and the mentors say knowledge is grater than money. Finally, they make him understand that he should go towards life to know the meaning of it. Charlie should observe people and profession and talk to them to know their perspective to meaning of life. Scene 7 Charlie starts to observe people. He talks to various professional people like business man, sports man, service holder, student, poet, bus conductor and so on. They tell Charlie that making money and peace in life is the meaning of life. Charlie tells everybody that he is searching for 2 taka which is not visible and touchable, but anyone can feel the note of 2 taka. Scene 8 Charlie and Rozina fall in love. They try to find the meaning of life within themselves. Sometime the meaning is positive, sometime it is negative as their expression of love. Scene 9 Six Charlies try to escape from harsh reality through a boat. They want to cross the sea of sadness, poverty, struggle, pain, failure, lie, dishonesty, crime and all sort of immoral inhumanity. They believe the other side of the sea would be peaceful. But they don’t know how ferocious sea can be. Many souls lost in this seawhen they tried to arrive other side of the sea. Scene 10 Lawyer charges Charlie in a courtroom where Socrates, Tagore and Lalon are the judges. The lawyer presents witnesses to prove Charlie guilty. But the fact is witnesses are not able to see Charlie. Confused lawyer asks Charlie why he is invisible to them. Charlie tells the lawyer that he is that ‘invisible and untouchable 2 taka’. It is not possible to find the meaning of life without that 2 taka. Scene 11 Charlie fails to search the note of 2 taka. So, Socrates proposes that everybody should drink hemlock. If anyone can survive, he will be the idol for generations. Rozina brings hemlock. After having the poison, Charlie feels that he is not dying, he feels the joy of living. Socrates, Tagore and Lalon bless Charlie. According to Rozina we all are Charlie, just need to know the inner us. Life is easy, if we don’t make space for tough time. Life is meaningful, if we can find. Life is beautiful, if we make it. |
